Much hype was released in the media about the powerful Kurds in the north of Iraq and how they could stop ISIS. That didn’t happen. The Kurds turned tail and ran. Was this purposely done by the Kurds in order to increase the pressure on Washington to deliver more advanced U.S. military weapons?

Combatants from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) took over Iraq’s largest dam unopposed by Kurdish fighters, who lost three towns and an oilfield to the Sunni militant group on Sunday (Rasheed, Salman).

The speedy retreat by Kurdish troops casts doubt that anyone can stand against these Sunni Islamist combatants.

The Islamic State, which sees the majority Shi’ites as apostates who deserve to be killed in Iraq, also captured the Ain Zalah oil field – adding it to four others under its control.

Aaron Zelin notes that the oil fields ISIS said they would take over back in 2006, are the exact same oil fields ISIS is taking over today (Zelin):

Analysts say a substantial part of Syria’s financial resources come from the oil fields they have captured. Officials from the Iraqi oil industry have said that $1 million per day is reaped by ISIS in Iraq from the oil it sells. The oil they sell is not pegged to international standards and so they are selling it for $30 per barrel. The oil is purchased from Syria through Turkey, and it is sold to black market traders (Leigh, Deeply).

After ISIS took the town of Zumar, black Islamic state flags were then hoisted. Next came mass executions of their prisoners.

Across Iraq, other religious minority groups like the Christians, have been robbed and forced to leave the country else face execution (Cousins).

Abstract: Aaron Zelin, a fellow at the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence points out that ISIS has recently managed to take a lot of the land they planned to take on this map from 2006. The implication — that ISIS may have executed a strategy first developed at least 8 years ago — suggests the group is way better at strategic planning than you might think.

Abstract: As the Islamic State (ISIS) battles Assad for the Shaar gas field, we weigh in on why oil fields have become so important to the jihadi group, and how turning them into battlefields could disrupt energy production – and ISIS’s cash flow.

Abstract: As Iraq risks becoming a failed state, the toll is also making itself felt in the persecution of minority groups, most notably Iraq’s Christians, thousands of whom have been forced to flee the fighting.
