Make Architects have just received planning permission to build a world-class institute devoted to research and processing of health-related data on Oxford University’s Old Road Campus. The Big Data Institute (BDI) will be built adjacent to two other Make-designed buildings: The Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology and the NDM Research Building. The BDI will be London-based Make Architects‘ fifth building on ’s Old Road Campus.

Wondering what’s inside? Find out more after the break.

Make Architects have designed the BDI to complement its two neighbouring designs; the BDI will mirror the masonry plinth, four storey accommodation, single storey entrance space and recessed roof of its two predecessors. Nestled neatly between the two structures, the aluminium exterior of the BDI echoes the aesthetic of the NDM Research Building, creating a sense of rhythm. The curvilinear facade along the north of the BDI leads the eye seamlessly into the eastern wall of its sister centre, the NDM. The BDI also replicates the trapezoid footprint established by the NDM Research Building and elaborates on it through the symmetrical addition of a second half.

New informal landscaped exterior spaces will take shape between the BDI and NDM Research Centre, providing spaces for socializing and flexible learning. The new outdoor area will bridge the gap between the two buildings, blending the interior and exterior spaces through an organic design scheme. Ventilation systems will be installed beneath the green space allowing for natural air circulation throughout the BDI.

The interior spaces are designed for collaborative learning and socializing. The interior is defined by its open plan, offering numerous different types of learning spaces to meet the diverse needs of Oxford students. A centrally located atrium dedicated solely to reading spans the height of the BDI providing natural light to seminar spaces, meeting rooms and data centres, and acting as the heart and soul of the Big Data Institute.
