As the last few trading days of 2014 draw near, let’s take a look at the dividend-paying stocks that registered the biggest gains on the year.

The Ground Rules

Before diving into the list, let’s first establish some ground rules for our study. Here are the screening rules I used to come up with the list of big gainers:

  1. Stock must be a current dividend payer, and still trading on the NYSE/NASDAQ/AMEX
  2. Stock’s market cap must be greater than $100 million
  3. Stock must be a traditional equity (for our purposes, we’ll exclude ETFs and other funds)
  4. Stock price must have gained at least 50% year-to-date

Now that we have our simple rules in place, let’s see what stocks were the biggest winners of the year so far!

Surprisingly, there’s a whole lot of variety in the outperforming stocks above. The list includes representatives from industries including airlines, energy, consumer cyclical, lodging, biotech, and more. This variety speaks to the breadth of the 2014 rally, in which oil and natural gas names were hit hard, but most other major sectors held their own.

The Bottom Line

With the Dow Jones Industrial Average looking at a 1,000-point gain for the month of December alone, the stocks in this list certainly stand out with their very strong 2014 performances. Wall Street is always forward-looking, however, so be sure to do your homework on any of the stocks listed above. It’s also worth noting that many of these names have low dividend yields, which isn’t surprising, given their strong share performances and the fact that higher-growth names tend to pay low dividends.
