Off-price retailer Ross Stores Inc. ROST -7.80% said Thursday its third-quarter profit rose to $171.6 million, or 80 cents a share, from $159.5 million, or 72 cents, a share, a year earlier. Sales rose 6% to $2.4 billion. The company forecast fourth-quarter profit of 97 cents to $1.01 a share in the fourth quarter.
Third-quarter results matched the consensus estimate while fourth-quarter outlook fell short of an average estimate of $1.08 a share, according to FactSet. “We are up against our own challenging multi-year comparisons and an upcoming holiday season that we believe will be the most intensely competitive and promotional selling period in recent years,” said Chief Executive Michael Balmuth. Ross shares slumped 7% in after hours trading.
