Anti-Malaysia sentiment builds in social media in China in wake of MH370 tragedy

Anti-Malaysia sentiment in social media in China is mounting following the news that all passengers on board the MH370 have most likely perished, among them 153 Chinese.

More than 37,000 posts have appeared on popular Chinese social network Weibo under the search term “never visiting Malaysia” since yesterday, according to social media analysis firm Meltwater.

And more than 43,000 Weibo messages are in support of a travel ban to Malaysia, a popular destination for Chinese tourists.

Celebrities with huge followings have exacerbated anti-Malaysia feeling in China on social media over the last 24 hours.

One celebrity, the singer Han Hong who has 10 million followers on Weibo, said: “Don’t even have the courage to tell the truth, what can you develop into? Never travelling to Malaysia! RIP”

Man Fei, a host for a Chinese matchmaking show who has more than 33 million fans, said: ”I have never been to Malaysia and never planned to. If you are doing so, please re-tweet. I would like to know many of us? Thank you.”

Meanwhile Chinese actor Chen Ken has said he will boycott “anything Malaysian”, including traveling to the country and its products.
