Mohammed Islam is rich and he’s not even out of high school. However, recent reports suggesting that the high schooler has earned $72 million trading stocks, are greatly exaggerated.

The rumor started when Islam was interviewed by NY Magazine earlier this week. In the report, author Jessica Pressler pointed out a rumor that Islam has made $72 million playing the stock market, mostly on his lunch break. Presslar writes, “Late last year, a rumor began circulating at Stuyvesant that a junior named Mohammed Islam had made a fortune in the stock market. Not a small fortune, either. Seventy-two million.”

While Pressler clearly states that the $72 million stock trading sum was just a rumor, it was quickly picked up as fact by many news agencies.

Dan Evon at Social News Daily points out that Mohammad Islam may not have earned $72 million, but he still earned at least eight figures.

Speaking to CNBC, Islam revealed, “The attention is not what we expected – we never wanted the hype. This was about friends trying to make something exciting together … We expected a regular article about what we hope to do … The way we were portrayed is not who we are.”

In the meantime, NY Magazine has defended its article, noting that the $72 million earned by the high school student was listed as a rumor started by teens at the high school.

Even if the young man had earned a few hundred thousand dollars, it would none-the-less be an impressive amount of cash for a part-time job.
